VPHIB v3 Cause of Injury List v3.2.0 (rev. 5/1/15)
Posted by , Last modified by on 05 October 2014 08:55 AM

Attached is the list of Causes of Injury (eInjury.01) accepted by VPHIB. We are committed to being flexible with the cause of injury types, but need to utilize best practices based upon ICD10-CM location codes. When an agency determines it needs to collect a cause of injury type that is not listed; a request to add an additional cause of injury will need to be submitted to OEMS prior to submission.

Agencies are encouraged to request additional cause of injury codes as early as possible. Upon request to add a cause of injury, OEMS will evaluate the request and determine if the requested cause of injury is duplicate to an existing code or if a better code should be used based on the national EMS data standard.

OEMS will take one or more of the following actions when an additional cause of injury is requested:

  • If the requested cause of injury is available within ICD10-CM.
  • Add the additional cause of injury to the VPHIB cause of injury lists.
  • Review existing codes for an equivalent cause of injury and advise the agency of the correct/better code to use in Virginia.
  • If the cause of injury being requested already exists we may advise the agency to simply re-label an existing cause of injury.
  • If the cause of injury already exist; OEMS may add the requested cause of injury to VPHIB, but have the new cause of injury code map to an existing cause of injury.
  • If the cause of injury is not available within ICD10-CM; OEMS will work with the NEMSIS TAC, our vendor, and other states to determine how to best collect the cause of injury being requested. This could be a timely process and agencies may need to create a custom element to capture the requested cause of injury type.

Agencies are highly encouraged to avoid creating mappings within their software products when setting up its cause of injury codes and other lists. Mapping should be a last resort in order to prevent breaking the data standard and having data quality issues. Consult OEMS prior creating any mappings that are connected with the mandatory data element.
